Why honest communication builds trust

Honest communication means saying what is actually true, even when a softer or more convenient version would be easier to deliver in the moment. This does not require bluntness for its own sake, but it does require resisting the temptation to shade a message toward what someone wants to hear rather than what is genuinely accurate.
Trust builds cumulatively through communication, since a person who consistently delivers accurate information, including unwelcome news, earns a reputation for reliability that a naturally more comfortable communicator, prone to softening or avoiding difficult truths, rarely manages to build in quite the same lasting way over time.
Honest communication also includes being clear about uncertainty rather than presenting a guess as a fact, since overstating confidence to sound more authoritative ultimately damages trust once the gap between claim and reality eventually becomes visible. Saying I am not certain is often more trustworthy than a confident answer that later proves wrong.
