What a gift register tracks

A gift register is a simple record listing gifts and hospitality offered to, or given by, staff and directors, including the date, the value, and the relationship between the giver and receiver. Its purpose is to turn an informal, easily forgotten exchange into a visible entry that can be reviewed later if a question ever arises.
Keeping the register genuinely useful requires more than a token effort, since entries should be made promptly rather than reconstructed from memory weeks later, and thresholds for what needs recording should be clear enough that staff are not left guessing whether a particular gift is significant enough to log.
Reviewing the register periodically, rather than letting it sit unread, is what actually gives it value, since a pattern of gifts clustering around a particular supplier or decision can reveal a relationship worth examining more closely. A register no one ever reviews offers little more protection than having no register at all.
